Hot Summer Days

This is what all of the cats are doing to pass the time ever since the days of 100 degrees plus started over a week ago. We've got another full week forecast with peak temperatures of 106-108F. Add in humidity and each day it feels another 10 degrees hotter than the actual temp.

Be mindful of hot temperatures if your cats spend any time outside. Be sure they have multiple water sources and plenty of shade. Check on them often as well.

Misty has IBD

Remember the kitty below from last week? Misty had a vet visit last week and we now think she has IBD - irritable bowel disease. She's only 7 years old but she looks and acts like she's 17. She's now on a high-dose steroid to try to calm down the inflammation in her intestinal tract so she'll feel more like eating. Fingers crossed she responds to this treatment!

I'm very happy to report that Misty finally accepted her new water fountain. I find her in there all the time taking a drink which is what she needs to be doing to keep her mild kidney dysfunction in check. Several of the other cats are liking it as well. Sometimes it can take several days for cats to take a liking to something new. Be patient if yours is the same.

Lots and Lots of Vet Bills!

In the last two weeks, I had one cat with an extensive dental procedure to the tune of $1000 and Misty had to visit the vet to see why she's so skinny. That one was only $120 but it came right on the heels of the big $1K one.

I hope you have a plan in place to cover vet bills when they become necessary. Some people buy pet insurance but I have too many for that to be financially possible so I self-insure by setting aside money in savings for emergencies.

I also have a Care Credit credit card in case there is an unexpected vet bill that exceeds my savings. This is a credit card with zero interest for 6 months to a year.

I don't want to encourage anyone to go into debt but if you do, a vet emergency would be one of the few good reasons for it. Just be sure you can pay that amount off before the interest-free period ends or you will be faced with really high accrued interest charges!

I know not everyone has the credit history to be able to obtain a card. I've been there myself in the past. When that is the case, every little bit you can save will help in the future. Believe me, I know this is easier said than done. But when I get little bits of extra cash from selling a used item or whatnot, I stick it aside in an emergency fund.

How do you cover unexpected vet costs for your cats?

The Catnip Life Newsletter June 9, 2023 - Awesome Cat Water Fountain on Amazon! Misty helping herself to my water glass It can never be overemphasized how important it is that your cats take in a lot of water to help keep their kidneys healthy. They tend to not drink enough on their own, so encouraging higher intake any way you can is a good habit to get into. Some cats love drinking from a running faucet, and other cats like my Misty like to drink from their human's cup with their paws. Of...

The Catnip Life Newsletter June 3, 2023 - The Vet Visit Edition Lucky, post-recovery from a scary vet visit. Lucky, the feral kitten I found in my yard last fall, had a date with the vet for his neuter surgery a couple of weeks ago. It did not go well. Poor guy was terrified. His feral nature re-emerged when his mum had to leave him in the hands of people he didn't know, even though they were very nice people. I wrote all about it in a Medium article, link at the end, but I'd like to list a...
